What the free plan gives
Video cuts, four minutes per free export: twelve browser tools, simplest first. Here's how. Number twelve: the free plan edits clips in your browser for $0. You trim, caption and export a clip without installing anything.
It's free to get started, and it works on a phone or a computer. Free users get most of the tools, and unlimited projects, with three per folder. It needs a stable internet connection, since it doesn't work offline. Exports run up to four minutes, up from one minute before.
They come in standard quality, with a Kapwing watermark. It also comes with ten credits for life, for features like auto subtitles. By our count, four minutes is 240 seconds of finished video. The link is in the description.
A paid plan removes the watermark. Up next, starting a project. Number eleven: a new project starts as a blank canvas, or with your upload.
Start a project
On a phone, you open Kapwing in the web browser at its own site. For bigger projects, a desktop or laptop gives more screen space and control. Video, images and audio can also come in from many public links. The source has to allow it, so not every website works.
Say Maya wants to edit a short clip she filmed on her phone. The timeline shows every layer, and when and for how long each appears. By our count, a project starts one of two ways: blank, or with a file. If step-by-step guides like this help you, subscribe.
Every official page is linked below. Coming up, uploading your clips.
Upload your clips
Number ten: you drag a file into the upload box, or click inside it to pick one. A double-click on the file, or Open, starts the upload. It takes common video formats, plus images and audio files. Her clip runs three minutes, and it uploads the same way.
Files must finish uploading before you can export. Kapwing suggests uploads of full HD or lower, for smoother playback. Videos longer than two hours can't be processed. By our count, two hours is 120 minutes, thirty free exports' worth.
Then, trimming and splitting.
Trim and split
Number nine: you trim a clip by dragging the white handles at either end. Or you type the exact start and end times in the trim panel. To cut a middle section, you drag the seeker to where it starts. The Split button, the S key, or a right-click then splits it there.
After a second split at its end, Ripple Delete removes it with no gap. Maya trims a shaky start and cuts one fumble from the middle. By our count, cutting one middle mistake takes two splits. On a phone, you touch and drag a clip's ends, and a scissor icon splits it.
When you trim the start, keeping the clip at zero seconds avoids a delay. Now, arranging the layers.
Arrange the layers
Number eight: you drag any layer left or right to set when it appears. Forward and Backward, in the right panel, set which layer sits on top. A title layer moved forward stays in front of the video. The plus and minus magnifiers zoom the timeline in and out.
Undo and redo arrows sit along the top of the timeline. With Snap To on, a moving layer lines up with the start or end of others. Trimming shortens a video from its ends, while cutting removes footage from any point. Splitting divides a video into separate clips at 1 on the timeline.
By our count, one split makes two clips, and two splits make three. Coming up, the right size for where it's posted.
Pick the size for where it goes
Number seven: a click on the grey canvas opens Resize Canvas in the side panel. You pick a preset, or type a custom size. Sixteen by nine is the most common shape for long, wide videos. Nine by sixteen is the most common for short vertical videos.
A sixteen by nine video is nineteen twenty pixels wide and ten eighty high. At nine by sixteen, that height leaves a width of 607 and a half pixels. Kapwing recommends filming in the shape you'll export, so no quality is lost. Fit to Center, Fill and Crop, and Speaker Focus are three ways to resize.
By our count, 607 and a half pixels is about a third of nineteen twenty. Then, captions.
Add captions
Number six: captions start in the Subtitles tab, once your video is on the timeline. You pick the language of the audio, and Kapwing writes the transcript. Then you read through it and fix any words. Say Maya's three-minute clip gets its subtitles in one pass.
With clear audio, the help center puts auto-transcription at about 90% accurate. Its tip is to run Clean Audio before you transcribe. Style presets like Pop Art, Typewriter and Handwriting change the look in one pick. A slider sets how many characters each subtitle shows.
You drag the captions on the canvas to move them. Burned-in captions, called open captions, look the same on every device. So the captions travel with the video wherever it's posted. Kapwing supports 155 language variants.
On the free plan, auto-subtitling runs up to ten minutes. Each minute of subtitles uses one credit. By our count, Maya's three-minute clip uses three of those ten credits. The free tool includes a limited number of minutes to try it.
Up next, text and images.
Add text and images
Number five: the Text tool, in the left toolbar, adds a text box to the canvas. Stylized text options sit right beside the plain Add Text button. On the right, you set the font, the text color, a background and a border. The Timing panel sets how long the text stays on screen.
Say Maya adds a title as a text box for the opening seconds. By our count, five settings shape that one text box: font, color, background, border and timing. Pictures can be resized, cropped, moved, rotated and adjusted. Images sourced or generated on Kapwing can be used for personal and commercial purposes, with attribution on the free plan.
No permission is needed to use those images. For images found by search, Kapwing says there's no guarantee they're copyright or royalty free. You own the rights to the content you create and post. Content you didn't create needs your right to use it, like a free license.
Then, music and sound effects.
Add music and sound effects
Number four: audio comes in four ways: upload, the audio library, a link, or your own recording. In the library, Music holds songs, and Sound Effects holds sounds like horns or laughter. Kapwing describes its built-in library as thousands of royalty-free songs and sound effects. Say Maya picks a calm song from the Music tab for her three-minute clip.
Once added, a track sits on the timeline, where you trim it to fit the video. Your own track goes in through the Media tab, if you have permission to use it. The free plan gets a starter set of stock assets, and paid plans get unlimited ones. A recording stops by itself at the fifteen-minute mark.
By our count, a fifteen-minute recording is nearly four times a free export. A link to a video with audio can also bring its sound in. Coming up, the sound itself.
Fix the sound
Number three: one click on Clean Audio removes background noise and makes voices clearer. It sits in the Edit menu of the right-hand toolbar. It also corrects loudness and reduces popping sounds, the pricing page says. Each layer has a volume knob, and the volume icon mutes it.
Split Audio divides voices and music into two layers, so you can remove one. Detaching the audio lets you re-sync it, or play only a new track. Auto Level Audio evens out the levels across several files. Transcripts come out less accurate when the speaker is far from the mic, or the room is noisy.
Each minute of Clean Audio uses two credits. By our count, ten free credits buy five minutes of Clean Audio, and a three-minute clip takes six. Clean Audio works on video and audio files alike. Detaching the audio also lets you make more precise edits to the sound.
Phone microphones often aren't built for high-quality sound, Kapwing notes. The noise remover works with mobile devices too. The pricing table lists five free minutes of Clean Audio, but its tool page says Pro, so check before relying on it. Then, the smart tools.
Speed it up with smart tools
Number two: Smart Cut finds the silent parts of your video and removes them. You select the video and click Smart Cut, under AI Tools in the right panel. The Silence Sensitivity slider sets how much goes: right removes more, left keeps more. Done cuts around the silences and leaves a set of split clips on the timeline.
Smart Cut trims Maya's pauses, and it uses none of her credits. Smart Cut reads volume and timing to find the gaps that break the flow. A threshold controls how aggressive the cuts are, so natural pauses can stay. Find Scenes spots scene changes and splits the video at those points.
It's built to help you resize clips faster. Smart Cut and Find Scenes work in the browser on any device, with nothing to download. Auto-Edit removes silences, filler words and bad takes for you. Smart Cut and Find Scenes use no credits.
Free users may get limited or one-time access, while paid users get unlimited access. Kapwing's silence remover page calls it free to try, with the free watermark on exports. By our count, Maya's clip uses three credits for subtitles and six for sound, nine of ten. Last, exporting and sharing.
Export and share
Number one: Export Project, at the top right, turns your edit into a finished video. You choose the format, the resolution and a compression level for the file size. Nothing can be downloaded until the project is exported. A standard-quality video takes at least as long to process as it runs.
By our count, Maya's three-minute clip needs at least three minutes to process. A higher-quality export can take twice as long to process. For a small file or a quick export, Kapwing suggests standard quality or lower. When it's done, the Download button saves it to your device.
Exports can be a video, a GIF, an image or an audio file. You can also share a unique Kapwing link, or send it straight to social networks. Projects start as Unlisted, so only people with the link can see them. Nothing posts by itself: you review the settings before any upload.
If a free project uses paid tools, the export may not go through. Upgrades aren't refunded, since everyone can try the free version first. Pro costs $16 a member a month billed yearly, or $24 billed monthly. It drops the watermark and exports videos up to two hours long.
By our count, $16 times twelve months is $192 a year. Free projects can be deleted after three days, so you download the video once it's ready. By our count, Maya's three-minute clip fits the four-minute free export with a minute to spare. Which apps actually pay you to edit videos?
